The Chelsea Club

The formal opening of the Chelsea Club took place at four o'clock on Wednesday, April 15th, 1926. "The charter membership closed at 227 members and no less than 200 charter members were present at the inauguration. Her Excellency the Lady Byng of Vimy, wife of the Governor General, was the guest of honour. Lady Borden, Lady Perley and Mrs. Charles Stewart presided at the tea table."

Now, after 84 years, the Chelsea Club is closing its doors, both literally and figuratively. We have been struggling for many years to maintain our house at 235 Metcalfe but the weight and cost of such an old building was too much to be sustained. We hoped to move the club to Rivermead Golf Club as a unit. Though the Rivemead has been very welcoming and has offered special deals to Chelsea Club members, we have failed to generate the necessary enthusiasm and momentum to keep the Chelsea club alive.

We are now preparing for a graceful end to this long tradition. Anyone who is interested is welcome to join the Rivermead, with your recommendation coming from the Chelsea Club. Details on this offer will be sent to you by e-mail or mail in the next while.

For all members, we will be holding a general meeting in the near future to explain the process and approach to winding up the affairs of the club. It is anticipated that any assets that are left will be donated to some form of Charity and in memoriam for a proud club which has played host to many fascinating women, and men, over the years.
